Batseri to Rakchham Hike: A Scenic Walk Through Sangla Valley
February 9, 2026
How to Visit India’s Last Village Chitkul from Batseri
February 23, 2026The Siman Glacier, sometimes spelled Simaan or Simanbasti Glacier, is one of the most accessible and visually striking glaciers in the entire Kinnaur region that you can reach in a single day without full mountaineering gear or multi-day trekking. It lies in a side valley above Chitkul, the last inhabited village in the Baspa Valley. The walk takes you from Chitkul up a gentle-to-moderate trail to the glacier snout, a beautiful blue-white ice wall fed by waterfalls from melting ice, framed by steep rock faces and high peaks all around.
The trail is roughly 6 to 10 km round trip, depending on how far you go beyond the snout. The elevation gain is about 400 to 600 meters. Chitkul sits at around 3,450 meters, and the glacier snout reaches approximately 3,900 to 4,000 meters. It is not a technical glacier trek. No crampons, ropes, or ice axes are needed to reach the snout. But it is still a high-altitude outing with real mountain conditions, sudden weather changes, and the need for proper preparation, awareness, and respect.
From Hotel Batseri we treat the Siman Glacier Walk as one of our most rewarding full-day excursions. It combines the “end of the road” feeling of Chitkul with the raw, elemental beauty of a living glacier, all in a manageable timeframe that fits perfectly into a Sangla Valley stay. We organize it with care so every guest, whether solo, couple, family, elderly, or first-time trekker, can experience it safely and comfortably.

Why the Siman Glacier Walk Is Special

You reach a real glacier snout in one day. Most glacier experiences in India require multi-day treks or serious mountaineering. Siman lets you stand in front of active ice, hear melting waterfalls, and feel the cold breath of the glacier in a single day from a comfortable base.
The scenery is dramatic and intimate. The blue-white ice wall is striking. Waterfalls pour from the snout. Rock faces rise sharply on both sides. High peaks tower above. The contrast between the green lower valley and the stark, icy upper valley is unforgettable.
It is quiet and uncrowded. Far fewer people come here than popular glacier treks like Gaumukh, Hampta, or Chadar. You can often have the snout area almost to yourself.
It is a perfect add-on to Chitkul. Combine morning exploration of Chitkul village with the glacier walk in the afternoon. Very efficient.
Wildlife and nature highlights are possible. Snow leopard habitat (very rare to see), Himalayan monal pheasant, ibex, blue sheep, marmots, and high-altitude birds are all possible, especially early morning or late afternoon when animals are more active.
How We Organise the Siman Glacier Walk at Hotel Batseri?

We make the glacier walk safe, comfortable, and completely tailored to your group and needs.
Pre-trek planning (evening before)
We sit down with you and ask detailed questions: Age group and fitness level Any medical conditions (asthma, knee problems, heart issues, previous altitude sickness) Whether you want photography focus, quiet time at the glacier, or relaxed pace Group size and composition (solo, couple, family with kids or elderly)
This lets us customize the day: pace, stops, packed items, guide support, and contingency plans.
Departure timing
Standard departure is 6:30 to 7:00 am (early start for best weather, light, and glacier views). We never let you leave later than 8 am. Afternoon clouds, wind, and sudden weather changes are common above 3,800 m. Early starts also give better chances for wildlife sightings and clearer views before clouds build.
Private jeep to Chitkul
We arrange a trusted local driver. The drive takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on road conditions and photo stops. We can stop for quick tea, photos of the Baspa River, or apple orchards along the way if you like.
Guide & support
Complimentary local guide for all guests (mandatory for safety). Guides are Kinnauri locals who know the trail intimately. They recognise wildlife signs, know safe paths, and understand weather patterns. They carry full first-aid kit, emergency oxygen, satellite phone (for remote areas), extra water, snacks, and emergency blanket.
Packed essentials from us
High-energy lunch: roti, sabzi, boiled eggs or paneer, dry fruits, chocolate, electrolyte powder. Hot water in thermos flask. Extra warm layer and rain jacket. Walking stick (we provide). Basic personal first-aid (band-aids, painkiller, blister pads).
Return Back to Chitkul by early afternoon, then jeep to hotel by 4 to 5 pm. Hot chai ready on arrival. Bonfire in the evening to share glacier stories.
Safety Precautions & Risk Management

Altitude & Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
Glacier snout is 3,900 to 4,000 m — real altitude. Mild AMS (headache, nausea, fatigue) is possible. Drink 4 to 5 litres of water on the day. Ascend slowly. Take regular breaks. Elderly, people with heart or lung conditions, or history of AMS must consult doctor before booking. Carry Diamox (if prescribed). Start 24 hours before. Serious symptoms (confusion, severe shortness of breath): descend immediately — guide will handle.
Sudden Weather Changes
High-altitude weather can turn fast. Clear morning can become rain, snow, hail, or high wind in 30 minutes. We check forecast the night before and again at 6 am. If clouds build early or wind picks up strongly, we cancel or shorten to viewpoint only. Always carry rain jacket and warm layer (temperature drops 10 to 15°C at glacier).
Trail Safety
Path is well-trodden but rocky, with loose stones and some steep sections near snout. Wear high-grip trekking shoes (mandatory — no regular sneakers). Use walking stick (we provide). Never go beyond snout without guide (crevasses, ice fall risk). Stay on trail — steep drop-offs in places.
Wild Animals Safety
Snow leopard, Himalayan brown bear, and musk deer present (very rare to see). Never approach or feed any animal. Make noise while walking (talk, clap, tap stick on rocks). If you see bear or big cat (extremely unlikely), stay calm, group together, back away slowly, do not run. Most common: monal pheasant, marmots, blue sheep — enjoy from distance.
Cleanliness & Leave No Trace
Carry all trash back — no bins on glacier trail. Use toilet at Chitkul or hotel before starting. Do not pick flowers, disturb plants, or throw food scraps — fragile alpine ecosystem.
Moral Behaviour & Respect
Ask before photographing locals in Chitkul. Dress modestly in village (shoulders and knees covered). Do not litter or damage ice/rock. Be polite to shepherds and locals — they are the real keepers of the valley.

| 10 to 17 years (children and teens) | Possible | Can go with parents. Shorter walk to viewpoint if needed |
| 55 to 70+ years (elderly) | Possible with support | Guide recommended. Walking stick, very slow pace. Route can be shortened or cancelled if conditions are tough |
| Under 10 years | Not recommended | High altitude, rocky trail, and unpredictable weather |
